Some companies may also perform panel interviews which can complicate it more. In a panel interview, you’ll still need to try and speak to each individual, but also to the group as a whole.

You have to work with this person intimately. You need to feel comfortable being candid and open with them if they are going to be able to coach you. When you speak with them, ask yourself if this is someone you can work with. Trust your gut.

Communications Focused

An interview coach is a communications coach. They need to help you tell your story in a concise and engaging way. They need to have a deep understanding of different communication styles. If they have a background or formal training in psychology, that should be a major plus.

Personal Experience in High-Stakes Settings

Working with someone who has been where you have should be taken into consideration. This doesn’t mean they have to have been an executive themselves. That doesn’t always equate to success in coaching. Ask them if they’ve been involved in hiring executives. Ask about how much they’ve worked with executives. You want to work with someone who understands the pressure involved and the communication dynamic at this level.
