Every year I try to refresh my list of niche job boards and share my thoughts on their safety, opportunities, and whether they are worth your time. Today, I’m taking a look at Remote OK for all of you who are searching for remote jobs.

Who Owns Remote OK

Remote OK is owned by a self-proclaimed digital nomad and Dutch entrepreneur, Pieter Levels. The site is built for other digital nomads looking for full-time and freelance work.

What Jobs Can Be Found on Remote OK

Most of the jobs listed on this job search website are with technology companies, but there are a few outside of that industry. I found one with a flooring company for example; however, this is rare. Every job listed on the site is 100% remote.

You can search by many different categories on the site; however, I found the most jobs listed in these categories:

If you’re looking for a remote job in any of those areas, this could be a good site for you to utilize.

I also found the occasional job for VP-level roles such as VP of Operations and a few Senior Accountant jobs.

Internships

Remote OK also has an entire category dedicated to finding internships. Simply click the “type” filter drop-down and find the internship button. When I searched using this filter, I found over a dozen remote internships posted in the last month. Everything from researchers to marketers, to politics was listed. The best part (besides the fact that they were remote) was that they were all paid internships.

How Many Companies List Jobs on Remote OK

I was pleasantly surprised by how many jobs were listed on this site. There were over 100 jobs posted in the last week - all remote. You can find jobs with household brands like Amazon, Starbucks, Microsoft, and Stripe, as well as jobs with smaller organizations you’ve probably never heard of.

How Does Remote OK Find Jobs to List on Their Site

Unlike other job boards such as Indeed or Geebo, Remote OK does not scrape the web for job postings. All of the jobs you see on their website appear to be from companies who pay Remote OK an advertisement fee to list their job.

That means each of these companies had made the conscious decision to advertise their jobs here to attract remote workers. That’s a great thing for you if you’re using this site.

No Built In ATS

Most sites that charge employers an advertisement fee have a built-in ATS (applicant tracking system), but Remote OK doesn’t. I think that’s a good thing for job seekers because rather than apply through Remote OK’s infrastructure, they instead direct you to apply directly on the listing company’s career site.

In other words, every job you find will either direct you to the company’s career page to apply or have you apply by emailing the company your information.

This helps job seekers vet companies and makes it easier (in my opinion) for your resume to be seen because no one has to check an external app to view it.

Where Are Remote OK Jobs From

The jobs found on Remote OK are across the globe. You can search by region and country using their filters and I didn’t see much difference between them. All of them had a healthy number of jobs listed. Whether you’re looking for remote jobs in the US, Canada, Europe, or elsewhere, you can probably find a few of them here by using the filters.

Are the Jobs Truly Remote Jobs

This job search site was built by a digital nomad for a digital nomad, meaning every job you find will be remote. But be aware that this doesn’t permit you to work from anywhere in the world. Companies still have to adhere to immigration, federal, and local laws which could prevent them from hiring anyone and letting them work from anywhere. You may be required to work in a certain time zone or the company may not have a payroll nexus set up where you live.

Do the Jobs on Remote OK Pay Well

One struggle I have with remote job boards is that the jobs listed don’t always compensate you for what we would consider a good wage in the US. Some of the remote job search websites are meant to attract candidates from parts of the world who are paid significantly less.

That doesn’t seem to be the case with the jobs posted on Remote OK. While you can find both freelance and full-time jobs on this site, and there are job seekers from parts of the world who are paid $10 per hour, the vast majority of the jobs listed pay between $60,000 and $95,000 per year.

Pay Transparency

One thing I value about Remote OK is that they force employers to list a salary range to advertise. They implemented this in 2021 to help promote open and transparent salary data for job seekers.

How Competitive Are the Jobs on Remote OK

Remote OK boasts that there are over a million remote workers that employers can access on their website. What that actually means is up for debate, but here are some facts.

I used some of my SEO tools to analyze their site traffic. I found that on average, there are between 100,000 to 250,000 people who visit their website each month. Knowing how these sites operate (because recruiting is my jam), it’s safe to assume the majority of that traffic is from job seekers. But keep in mind that is much lower than sites like Indeed or LinkedIn.

It’s safe to say that with any remote jobs, you’re going to have increased competition. With in-person roles, you’re most likely competing against a local talent pool. But with remote jobs, you could be competing with the entire world’s talent pool. Nonetheless, I wouldn’t let that stop you or get you down.

Don’t worry if the job has a high number of applicants. In my experience as a recruiter, most won’t be qualified. If your resume shows your qualifications, apply for the job.

If you can target remote roles that are local to you, you might increase your chances. Employers love to hire locals, even if it’s a remote job.
