Accounting Manager Jobs [Where to Find Them]

Accounting Manager Jobs

There are an estimated one million Accounting Managers in the United States (Institute of Management Accountants). These jobs can be lucrative with an average base salary of nearly $80,000 per year (PayScale), and that doesn’t even include perks and benefits. In places like California, New York, and Vermont, it’s not uncommon for average salaries to exceed $100,000.

But where do you find these jobs? How do you obtain one? If you Google accounting manager jobs, you’ll quickly see that there are hundreds of job boards. But searching hundreds of job search websites isn’t productive and chances are you already have a day job.

I’ve been an accounting recruiter for nearly a decade now and in this article, I will break down my favorite job search websites where I’ve found Accounting Manager candidates and where the job seekers I’ve worked with have found the most success so you too can run the most efficient Accounting Manager job search.

What is an Accounting Manager Job?

Some Accounting Managers manage other people, some don’t. But all of them oversee the day-to-day accounting and are often the front-line managers when it comes to any transactional accounting functions. If that sounds like you, you’re in the right place.

Without further ado, here are the best places to find Accounting Manager jobs on the Internet.

The Best Accounting Manager Jobs

I’ve been using a variety of websites for nearly a decade to recruit top accounting managers for jobs. Each year, the market changes and I prioritize some job search sites over others. Indeed - Best Overall

Indeed has taken the top spot for several years now, although other sites are encroaching on their number one status for accounting manager jobs in my opinion and I may have a new top-ranking site by next year.

Pros for Accounting Manager Jobs

  • Indeed still offers free job postings for employers that actually produce great candidates making it a desirable place for small and mid-size businesses to list their Accounting Manager jobs.

  • Due to their sheer volume, boasting over 63.7 million monthly users, when you put all those smaller organizations together, you get a lot of accounting manager jobs. In fact, when I searched for new jobs posted in the last 24 hours, there were over 1,500 new jobs listed.

  • They’ve really cracked down on spam jobs from recruiting agencies. It’s free for employers to post jobs, but they no longer allow agencies to post jobs for free meaning there are fewer fake jobs floating around. (Let’s all admit it, we know many agencies are guilty of this).

Cons for Accounting Manager Jobs

  • There’s a lot of competition here. With millions of job seekers applying for jobs, you can easily become lost in the mix. It’s key to have a great resume, follow up with the employer, and apply early. Setting up job alerts will be key to your success.

LinkedIn - Best for Number of Accounting Manager Jobs

LinkedIn has really beefed up its job listings for management accountants this past year. Indeed used to always list more, but this is the first year that I’ve seen more Accounting Manager jobs on LinkedIn than Indeed.

Pros for Accounting Manager Jobs

  • It’s a social networking site, not a job board. This means that if you know how to use social media, it can give you a competitive edge. Anyone can search your profile and if it’s optimized for search and filled with relevant material, you could have job opportunities finding you.

  • Depending on who you ask, 72% (JobVite) to 95% (My Personal Recruiting Network) of recruiters use LinkedIn to find accounting and finance candidates. If you want jobs, go where the recruiters are. And there’s no doubt that accounting and finance recruiters are on LinkedIn.

  • They exceeded Indeed this year for the number of accounting manager jobs on job listings. When I searched last, I found over 3,000 Accounting Manager jobs listed in the last day alone. That’s a lot of jobs.

  • LinkedIn will notify you when a job poster views your application or downloads your resume. You can also see who views your profile with a premium subscription, but I personally find this to be a waste of money for job seekers.

Cons for Accounting Manager

  • It’s expensive for companies to use in comparison to other options. This has led to a trend of larger companies and third-party recruiters predominately using LinkedIn to advertise jobs. That’s not a rule, but a trend. This means if you’re looking for opportunities with small and mid-size organizations, you may be better suited with a job site like Indeed.

  • There’s more room for bias. I like to think the majority of recruiters keep their biases in check and are good human beings, but let’s face it, all humans have biases and some run more rampant than others. Not having a profile picture for example could get in your way and some of us don’t want our faces online or have the money to take a professional picture. Although I’ve heard AI photos are helping to mitigate this problem.

  • It’s hard to tailor your resume and background for jobs which often leads to more interview success. You can still tailor your resume, but it’s near impossible to tailor your LinkedIn profile.

IMA - Best for Relevant Jobs Listed

The Insitute of Management Accountants seems to be a hidden secret among many accounting professionals. Whereas the CPA often gets lots of attention, the CMA (Certified Management Accountant) and the association behind it rarely is talked about as much. As a former Chapter President of the IMA, I can tell you the IMA website is a treasure trove of resources, including its own job board.

Pros for Accounting Manager Jobs

  • It’s backed by the most relevant association for private industry accounting managers. Their sole aim is to promote management accounting in the private sector, especially in the manufacturing sector. This means you find very relevant jobs on their site.

  • They offer additional accounting-specific resources such as the industry gold standard Certified Management Accountant credential and other continuing education resources that can give you an edge in your job search.

  • You don’t have to wade through jobs that make no sense to you. There are no sales jobs disguised as “finance” jobs or anything else of that nature.

Cons for Accounting Manager

  • There aren’t as many jobs here as there are on LinkedIn or Indeed. Nationwide, you’ll find about 20 new jobs per day. The good news is that some of them are remote, so that may open up more opportunities for you.

CalCPA - Best Association Job Board

Although I chose CalCPA, the truth is many state CPA Associations have excellent job boards for accountants. You’ll find a mix of both public and private accounting jobs so don’t assume this isn’t worth checking out. Even if you’re burning out of public accounting and looking to leave, check your state’s association job board.

Pros for Accounting Manager Jobs

  • These job boards are run by people who get you because they are you.

  • Many of them offer free resume reviews even to non-members. I don’t know who reviews the resumes or the quality of them, but it’s a perk worth checking out.

Cons for Accounting Manager

  • Typically state CPA associations have fewer listings than a global site such as the IMA, but you can still find enough relevant accounting manager jobs that it’s worth checking out.

Accounting Jobs Today - Best Niche Accounting Manager Job Board

Most niche job boards for accounting managers require job seekers to pay in order to access their jobs. My opinion is that no job seeker should have to pay in order to apply for a job. It just seems wrong to me. With that being said, I finally found a niche accounting job board that doesn’t require you to pay anything. Meet Accounting Jobs Today.

Pros for Accounting Manager Jobs

  • Not only do they let companies advertise jobs with them directly, but they also scrub the web for additional accounting jobs and will redirect you so you can apply for them. This makes it easy to find many jobs in one place and then apply.

  • The jobs here are exclusively for accounting professionals making every job relevant. You won’t be wading through non-accounting jobs.

  • This website also has a wide variety of accounting jobs so you’re sure to find what you are looking for. Most of the listings are from private industry companies.

Cons for Accounting Manager

  • When I looked last there were only 3 new jobs posted directly in the past 20 days; however, because they also list jobs from other job boards as a job aggregator, this niche accounting job search site is worth visiting.

  • The site lists career coaches as well; although none of them seem to have any accounting backgrounds.

Robert Half - Best for Accounting Manager Jobs With Recruiting Agencies

While there are several recruiting agencies that specialize in accounting, Robert Half is by far the largest when it comes to locations and the number of contracts with employers. When I spoke with a Robert Half executive this week, I was blown away by the sheer size and scope of their capabilities. This is a firm you want to check out if you’re thinking about contract work or even if you’re working with third-party recruiters to find a permanent job. They’re great for both.

Pros for Accounting Manager Jobs

  • They have a large network of employers and their teams know a lot of hiring managers. If you have the right qualifications, they can very likely get your foot in the door.

  • It’s not uncommon for a major metropolitan branch to have dozens of job openings with multiple companies. Having a recruiter look out for jobs that match your experience is a huge advantage.

Cons for Accounting Manager

  • Much of your success will depend on who you work with. While the Robert Half company is massive and employs thousands of recruiters, the quality can vary. If you can, choose to work with a recruiter who understands accounting and finance and has been with the company for at least two years.

Association of Chartered Certified Accountants - Best for International Accounting Manager Jobs

This association lists internships, staff-level jobs, and director positions specifically for accounting professionals. It’s another association job board, but this one is based out of the UK and has a listing of global jobs. If you’re thinking about working outside of the US, this association’s job board is worth checking out.

Pros for Accounting Manager Jobs

  • There were over 2,000 jobs in the US when I looked which means even if you’re not looking for international roles, it could be a good resource to find accounting manager jobs.

  • It has a good variety of listings meaning it’s good for everyone from college students and Directors and everyone in between.

Cons for Accounting Manager

  • There are a lot of staffing companies and CPA firms that list jobs through the association. If you’re looking for private industry jobs, there are some, but it’s not the majority.

American Accounting Association - Best for Transitioning to Teaching Accounting

The AAA is the largest association of accountants in academia. If you want to pick up an adjunct professor role, their job board is one you won’t want to skip. When I looked last week, there were over 90 accounting jobs listed on their website. Most of them are teaching jobs, but they do list some private industry jobs as well.

Other Associations that List Accounting Manager Jobs

AICPA & CIMA

The Association of International Certified Professional Accountants is an international group that hosts a job board with global accounting listings. There are more staff-level roles than managers listed and it’s predominately listings from CPA firms and Advisory firms.

IAA

The Insitute of Internal Auditors typically lists Audit Manager roles, but they do occasionally list accounting manager jobs too. It is rare, but I have seen them on their website. If you’re struggling with finding enough job openings to apply for, you can check out this website.

Other Recruiting Firms with Accounting Manager Jobs

Ledgent Accounting and Finance

Ledgent isn’t anywhere close to the size of Robert Half, but they have locations all across the United States. You can view their openings (both contract and direct hire) on their website and then submit your resume or reach out to a recruiter directly. When I last checked there were nearly 500 accounting openings, many of them management-level roles.

When I spoke to a recruiter at Ledgent, I was impressed by the commitment they had to the accounting and finance profession. One branch even hosted CPE events for continued education.

Lee Hect Harrison, Formerly Parker + Lynch

LHH is one of the largest recruitment and HR consulting firms in the world, rivaling Robert Half. On their website you can find contract and direct hire accounting manager jobs listed or reach out to a recruiter at your local branch to discuss what jobs they are working on that may match your qualifications.

Accounting Fly

This company is a boutique accounting recruitment firm. While much smaller than the other agencies listed, they specialize in remote accounting jobs. Most of their jobs are with CPA firms for tax, assurance, and bookkeeper roles, but they’re all remote. Similar to all of the companies in this category, you won’t be able to see the name of the companies hiring on their website and you’ll have to work through the firm for placement.

Other Niche Accounting Job Boards Considered

The Ladders

While not an accounting job board, this site is focused on jobs paying over $100,000 per year. If you’re looking for VP level, CFO, or Senior Assurance jobs with CPA firms, you’ll find them all on this site. There aren’t as many as the other job boards and association listings, but there are 22,000 employers that list jobs on this site and they have an accounting subsection you can search.

iHire Accounting

This company has a niche job search site for nearly every type of role and this is their accounting niche job board. I didn’t include it above because job seekers have to pay to access their full list of jobs. In addition, you can’t even view jobs unless you create an account and sign in. Something about that has always bothered me. Every good job board I know allows you to view listings without registering.

The cost is $25 per month to access their job board. You do get some additional coaching benefits with the price, but I can’t vouch for the quality of them or the quality of their jobs listed because they keep things pretty hidden.

Accounting Crossing

Another niche job search website that focuses on accounting. Some employers pay to advertise with them, but they’re big claim to fame is that they go out and source jobs from across the internet. Because of this model, they do charge job seekers $30 per month to apply for jobs on their site. There are some jobs that you can apply for without paying this fee, but the majority require payment.

Other Major Job Boards With Accounting Jobs

Google

While not truly a job board, Google can be a great place to start an accounting manager job search. Google searches the internet and can show you jobs from every location possible. Using boolean logic will help you search effectively. You can try putting this in the search parameter to start “Accounting Manager Job” and “Location”.

ZipRecruiter

I’ve used ZipRecruiter for years to find accounting talent. I didn’t list them earlier because you’ll find there aren’t many accounting manager jobs listed when compared to the other options I’ve already listed. This job search website is great for staff accountants and senior accountants though.

CareerBuilder

When I first started recruiting, CareerBuilder was the job board to use. Today, they’ve experienced a significant decline in quality and numbers in my opinion. You still find a lot of recruitment agencies posting accounting manager jobs on this job board. If you’re looking to work with a recruitment firm, you can check out this job board. But you won’t find many companies posting their accounting manager jobs directly on this site anymore.
